GI Problems

by sickandverytired, Oct 02, 2006 12:00AM
I had my gallbladder removed in 2005.  A year later I have began having anxiety attacks, sour stomach, loss of appetite, and upper right quadrant pain.  I also have diarrhea which I experience occasionally in the morning.  I go to the bathroom 4 or 5 times and then it stops. I also have persistant nausea which prevent me eating and a loss of appetite. I went to the the doctor who did an endoscopy, US, amylase and lipase test for my liver and pancreas which showed nothing.  He diagnosed me with IBS.  He gave me questran and Prevpac, which is suppose to control my acid reflux and H pylori bacteria.  I still have the all the same symptoms, nothing was relieved.  I have a loss of appetite, nausea, diarhhea and right upper quadrant pain, which sometimes radiates to my medial chest.  I also have ear aches and feels like my throat is closing up.  I dont know what to do.  Please help me understand.

IBS is possible.  If this is the case, medications like anti-spasmodic agents and Zelnorm can be considered.

Another option would be Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, which can lead to some of the symptoms after gallbladder removal.  An ERCP with Sphincter of Oddi manometry can be considered to investigate this possibility.

Upper GI disease can also be considered.  This option can be evaluated with an upper endoscopy.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I have had the same problem since my gallbladder surgery. I have tried all the meds for IBS with no help. My gastro did the upper endoscopy, but he refused to do the ERCP due to the risks and the fact that my liver enzymes were normal. He acts like he has never heard of Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. I have had the same issues for over 10 years. I am sleep deprived and depressed from battling the pain. Any suggestions?
