Gallbladder Disease

by ktcntpa, Jun 14, 2007 12:00AM
I am HIV Positive and have Chronic Hepatiits B and was just diagnosed with Gallbladder Disease and being sent by my doctor to have my gallbladder removed.  My ultrasound showed sludge and Echogenic Foci in the gallbaldder.

My question #1: How long is post op recovery and how long before I will be able to travel (via air) as I fly a lot for work.

I am not sure wheter I will be able to have Laparoscopic surggery or the regular sugery so if I could have post op recover times for both and the when I will be able to fly again.

The reason I am not sure which surgery is I had stomach surgery and have an scar the runs veritical 3 inches above and below the belly button.  Question # 2: Will I be able to have the laparoscopic type surgery?

Question #3 : Also will my HIV or Hepatitis be a factor for my recovery or should I have concern about the surgey due to these medical conditions?

Thank You

To answer your questions:
1) Recovery time would vary from patient to patient.  Normally 7-10 days would be needed for a full recovery.

2) Normally, the laparoscopic approach is needed, unless there are complications or if the surgery is complicated.

3) HIV would make one more prone to infection.  However, there should not be significant delay in healing due to the HIV or hepatitis.

These questions should be discussed with your personal surgeon.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Would I be able to travel via air after the 10 day recovery?
