Gallbladder Type Pain - No Gallbladder

by solobree, Nov 07, 2009 10:02PM
Had gallbladder removed 3 years ago - pain completely gone afterwards - some reflux since surgery (controlled with Prevacid).
Pain has returned 3 years later.  Had 3 ultrasounds, Hida Scan and MRI - no stones or sludge showing up and all results normal.  Gastroscopy showed only mild gastritis, everything else normal.
Several blood tests for liver function have been done with elevated GGT each time.
Pain in right side, just off center and going under ribs to the side and also the back (between shoulder blades).
Pain every day (some days mild with more pain as the day goes on, and some days a lot of pain all day).
Seems to be affected by eating and moving around.  If I just sit quietly and don't eat pain is fairly mild.
Have been on a diet of next to no fat (rice, oatmeal, bread, cereal) for 9 months.
Have also had a couple of episodes of passing out - probably due to not eating enough and not having proper nutrition.

Doctors have basically just been making me wait for months on end for the next test or to be refered to someone else.
Have 3 opinions plus have been refered to the surgeon and the GI specialist - and now I am just waiting again.
Pain is worse towards the end of the day and at night.

Any suggestion of tests that I should request or other things that it may be that haven't been checked into yet are welcome!

Definitely go see the GI doc.  Even without a gallbladder, you can still develop small stones in the bile duct that cause the same problems.  A gastro doc can flush those out with an ERCP procedure.

They are telling me that there is no point in doing an ERCP because the MRI showed nothing in the bile duct and the Hida Scan showed no blockages.  And also the ultrasound showed nothing.  I have actually already been to the GI Specialist (he sent me for the Hida Scan) and am waiting and waiting to get in to see him again.
I keep wondering if there is something that is just not showing up on these tests or if they are looking at the wrong thing.
