Gallbladder or Thyroid?

by e_Angel, Nov 09, 2008 09:39AM
My sister, 28 years old, has been suffering for 5 months with abdominal pain, daily vomiting (worse in afternoon/evening), constipation, heavy belching, and (recent) weight gain. She had her thyroid removed 2 years ago, after years of hyperthyroidism, and was prescribed synthroid (her parathyroid was damaged in surgery). Thyroid disease runs in the family, as does Chrohn's Disease, Grave's Disease, familial polyposis and gallbladder disease. She's had lots of tests run, ultra-sound, CAT scat, Endoscopy, and a Hydascan (waiting on the results). She's unable to clean out for the Colonoscopy, because she's unable to hold down the medication, and she can barely move her bowels. The most recent Gastrologist ran her thyroid level, and the result was 14. He said she needs to go see an Endocrinologist, fix her levels, then come back to see him. But, because her vomiting is preventing her from taking her synthroid, I think we need a better game plan. I'm afraid the thyroid level could be a result of her inability to hold down her synthroid, not that the GI problems are a result of the thyroid. But when 2 doctors are bouncing her back and forth, how can she get treatment? Her most current blood work showed high white cells, low red cells, very low calcium, very low potassium, among other irregularities. She recently switched to Medicaid, when her husband (in the middle of a divorce) dropped her insurance without informing her. So, she just found a primary care doctor, but she still needs to find a new Endocrynologist, Cardiologist (she has peritonitis), Neurologist (for fibromyalgia) and a new back & pain doctor (she had back surgery 2 years ago to fuse herniated discs). As if all of that wouldn't be difficult enough, she's been so sick, she can't do anything at all. If the hydascan comes back negative, I don't know what we'll do! Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
