Gallbladder?

by tadpole2, Feb 14, 2008 05:23PM
This discussion is related to hydascan.

I have had chronic upper abdominal pain and nausea for a while now.  The pain is worse at different times.  I recently had an ultra sound of my gallbladder which showed nothing.  However during the testing, 2 kidney stones showed.  I since passed those - hoping that was the problem.  I am still having the same kind of pains and nausea.  The doctor wants me to have a Hida scan - however, I went to see another doctor who is running some blood and urine tests.  I am just so frustrated and sick of this.  I won't know anything until March 10th about everything.  Does any of this sound familiar with anyone?  I am so tired of feeling blah!

Pains from the kidney are more on the sides, pain from gallbladder is on the front right side, right under the rib cage.

I guess you need to complete urinary tests, and kidney function tests and treat the kidney disease, if it exists. If after that problems will continue, you can continue with HIDA scan - it's much more accurate than the ultrasound.

Can the HIDA scan show stones that the ultrasound didn't?  Does problems with your gall bladder cause a lot of nausea?  That's worse than the pain.  The pain comes and goes pretty quick - but the nausea lingers and is aweful.  I have tried to watch what I ate and when I ate it.  I'll be glad when the results are in!  Thanks for your info.  I appreciate it.

The u/s just visualizes the gallbladder, but it doesn't tell you much more than that, unless the gallgladder is distended or has thickened walls. The HIDA scan with CCK injection will indicate how the gallbladder is functioning.

Problems with the gallbladder can result in nausea.

In the meantime, try following a low fat diet to see if that's of help.

Both gallbladder and kidney disease can cause nausea and colic pain.

Pain from gallstones is on the right, under the rib cage, on the middle of the right half of upper abdomen.

Well, you have confirmed kidney stones, you should solve that either. Ultrasound (special one) may work better in this case - it may actually break the stones down, so no operation is usually needed.

I had a CT scan a week and a half after the ultra sound.  The CT scan showed there were no stones on my kidney.  I only have 1 kidney - right.  Approximately 4 years ago, I had to have lithro.. to zap a "nice size" stone.  We aren't sure if the 2 I supposedly passed were left overs or new ones.  I have now developed mid to lower back pain - mostly on my left side (back) to go along with my upper abdominal (right side) and nausea.  I really would like to meet with the doctor before the 10th of March.  I just don't know if I can stand all this for 2 more weeks!  It is beginning to wear on my nerves.  I can't sleep all night unless I take a "knock out" pill.  I am so afraid something is really wrong and time is wasting - I know fear can make you go nuts.  I wonder how long it takes for the blood they drew (5 tubes) and the 24 hour urine collection takes to be analyzed?  Again, I just want to know something!  I would love to have something to take away the pain and nausea that doesn't put me to sleep.  I have to work and can't take the medicine.  Any advice?

Like you said in the first post: "doctor wants me to have a HIDA scan". Go and arrange this in next days - it is possible that it is a gallbladder: stones, sludge, or infection. Again - it happens really often, that ultrasound doesn't show anything, but HIDA scan does. Just have that HIDA scan.
