Gluten Intolerance

by Adrienne Wingfield, Jan 12, 2006 12:00AM
Does Gluten Intolerance run the same long term health risks as Celiac Disease? If I don't adhere to a 100% gluten free diet if I have Gluten Intolerance, will I have a greater chance of getting Lymphoma or Osteoporosis?

Thanks.

I am not aware of a difference between gluten intolerance and celiac disease.  I believe they are different terminology for the same disease.

Celiac disease is associated with an increased risk of lymphoma as well as other GI cancers.  Studies are mixed as to whether adherence to a gluten-free diet would alleviate the risk.

Regrading bone loss - studies also show that loss of bone density may persist despite maintaining a gluten-free diet.

These questions can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
