Is it really possible to get a negative result from a HIDA scan. My 30 min ejection rate after eating a boost pudding is -6% and at 60 min it is 25.7%. I really do not have terrible symptoms, nausea which comes with no pattern and general abdominal discomfort-which does not kill. They referred me to a surgeon, do they usually operate on a case like this? Any opinion is appreciated.
thanks,
sibel
The negative fraction at 30 minutes may be due to the way the calculation is done for the ejection fraction. Basically, what it means is that at the 30 min point in time, they' hadn't recorded release of bile from the gallbladder of any measurable amount. However, that is not usually the case, so I'm assuming that is the main reason they referred you to a surgeon.
Whether they operate or not is typically up to the surgeon, but if you have no stones and what might be considered a low ejection fraction, many surgeons are opting not to operate in a lot of cases. When surgery is done on a person with no stones and no true indication that the gallbladder is malfunctioning, the results are not always those that are hoped for.
Please make sure to fully discuss all your options with the surgeon. And you may want to consider following a low fat diet to see if that's of any help with the nausea and abdominal discomfort.
