Having my gallbladder removed

I have had extreme pain in my gallbladder area for about 12 years. I finally followed through at the doctor and he said I have gall stones and that because of the pain it had to be removed. I thought they had medicine that could dissolve them or the stones could be taken out but the surgeon said no. I am just trying to get more information on the surgery and if this was necessary? I am in SOO much pain and they gave me vicodin until I have the surgery but it doesn't help. I have cut out greasy food but is there anything else I can do to ease the pain?

Thank you all so much for your feedback. I think I might have had the surgery years ago but until now no doctor has been able to tell me what the pain is from. At least I know and I don't have to think I am going crazy. Everything I have been reading about the surgery hasn't been good so it is REALLY good to hear positive things about it.

DEFINITELY have the surgery. There are no other options and you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago. Nowadays they almost always use a scope and make a few very small holes instead of one great big incision. I was back to work 5 days after my surgery.

Ease the pain? The pain killers may help, but I know the pain you are going through and it is terrible. I found a hot water bottle on the right hand side gave a little comfort, and keep away from any fatty foods or spicy foods. Well that was my experience.I had my gall bladder removed with no problems and it is so good to be able to eat what I like and not wonder when the next attack is going to come on.The keyhole surgery is over so quickly and you soon get back to normal. Try not to fret as stress brings on attacks as well. I am no doctor but as I said , that was my experience.
Please let us know how you are.
