Helicobacter Pylori

Dear Medical Community

My friend's son had did a gastrocopy. The Gastric biopsy diagnosis : Active gastritis with "Helicobacter pylori". This bacteria is very strong and active in his stomach, caused him tummy pain, vomiting, lost weight. He was on antibiotic & medication but still not better so the doctor did another Urea breath test. The result shown Helicobacter Pylori POSITIVE! and given him another course of Antibiotic. He have to take 16 antibiotic everyday.

My question is what is this bacteria? After the full course of antibiotic will he be recovered?

Kindly advise.

Thank You.

Warmest Regards
Worried

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  Helicobacter pylori (more commonly known as h pylori) is very common.  Over 50% of people in the entire world have it.  He will not necessarily be recovered after the full course of antibiotics.  Sometimes it takes many rounds of antibiotics to kill off the bacteria.  Good luck.

My doctor says breath test to be unrealiable. Most people have this bacteria inside and this test usually shows a positive result what actually may not be true. The best way to check if bacteria was beaten is to repeat a gastroscopy. Or if ailments stop it is often assumed that bacteria is gone.
