Help Please, now I have an ulcer, what next?

by Judith__0, Oct 18, 1998 12:00AM

I wrote you in July and again this month about different tests such as
liver function and CMV. My last CMV was 6.2 and has been that for the
last three times the test has been done. Now my Peptic ulcer has flared
up and will be having a EGD done this week. I have had peptic ulcer disease
for a couple of years, also IBS and have been having trouble sleeping so my
doctor has put me on Ambien 10mg to help me sleep. He also thinks i have Fibromyalgia.
I feel like he is drawing at straws and really has no idea what is going on. The only
thing I am sure of is that I do have an ulcer but as for all the other symptoms I'm
not so sure of. The swelling in my lower stomach makes me feel like I am pregnant, what
with the weight and pressure. I am having pain with my ulcer and also aching and pain
in my knees and feet. What if anything does all of this have to do with my elevated liver
enzymes and CMV tests coming back elevated? Can Fibromyalgia be linked to all of this
and if so how? I also am losing some control over my bladder( with leakage). I am so
confused over all of this and I really don't want to change doctors as I like mine very
much, but am starting to feel he is as confused as I am. Any advice you can give me again
I would really appreciate. Here are my symptoms again, weight gain(25lbs),swollen stomach,
trouble sleeping, pain and achiness in knees and feet, leaky bladder and now a peptic ulcer.
I had spotted some black grainy things in my bowel movements and the doctor did a CBC to
see if I am anemic. I don't have those results back yet.I'm sorry this is so long but I
am trying to give you as much info as I can. Please help me if you can as I am starting
to give into this and I know if I stop pushing myself whatever it is will take over and
I will get even worse. Thank you again for being here, Judith

Dear Judith,
Due to the complexity of your story it is difficult to provide specific suggestions but a few general comments are appropriaye.  Many people have antibdies to CMV but active infection is unusual unless there is immunosuppression.  Active CMV infection can be associated with ulcer disease as well as liver disease.  You need to ask your doctor whether there is active infection, based on the CMV seology.  If the answer is no, then CMV is not the cause for any of your problems.
Fibromyalgia can cause malaise, fatigue, muscle aches etc but does not cause GI pathology i.e. liver disease or ulcers.
