Hemorrhoid Help - Serious

Hello,
I was constipated for about 4 days and decided to try as hard as I could to produce a bowel movement. The result was a massive hemorrhoid a few days later. It was just painful at first and then it began to bleed very bad for a little more that a week dark red blood. The bleeding began to slow and for the most part stop. Now there seems to be puss or mucas coming from the Hemorrhoid and a very fowl smell.
I have had one similar to this before (just appear, bleed, then go away) it went away in about a week. Its now been about a month. I am 42 and in very good health. I want to try and heal this thing myself without having to go for a Dr visit.
Can anyone help recommend a coarse of action and inform me on how serious this is?
