Hemorrhoids vs Villous adenoma vs UC

by nucat78, Jun 29, 2006 12:00AM
Reading a number of threads on this board (and elsewhere)leads me to wonder:

What are the differentials between non-prolapsed internal hemorrhoids, villous adenoma and rectal ulcerative colitis?  Do non-prolapsed hemorrhoids ever produce mucus?

Any data on relative incidence?

Thank you.

Each can present with overlapping symptoms.  In terms of frequency, internal hemorrhoids would have a significantly increased frequency as compared to a villous adenoma or rectal ulcerative colitis.  Villous adenomas account for about 5 to 15 percent of all adenomas.  I cannot quote the exact numbers of relative incidence between these three conditions.

Although possible, it is uncommon for hemorrhoids to lead to mucous.  This symptom is more common with colitis.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
