High Bilirubin levels & jaundice symptoms...

by eskay, Oct 14, 2009 09:04PM
Hi, just wandering if someone can suggest some next steps for me...?

I have just received a blood test result of high Bilirubin and am concerned about it, because it ties into other symptoms I have that I have read are those of Jaundice:
The whites of my eyes have gradually yellowed over the last yr or so, my skin (usually pale but very clear) has been erupting more with severe eczma (eczema) than ever before, my urine is dark in colour & strong in smell, and my stools r clay coloured. I also am irritable and fatigued with not enough energy to exercise & find it hard to concentrate..and my apetitie is close to nil. (I usually have a huge apetite, despite my small frame!)
I dont drink alcohol, although I drank heavily for about 3-4yrs in my early 20's: likely easily over 3drinks per day.

6mths back my Live Blood Analysis showed I have very low protien levels in my blood, although this recent blood test showed normal levels.
My doctor said it was nothing to be concerned about because my ASP & other things are at normal levels... but he didnt seem thorough at all because he didnt even ask about my eyes/urine or stool colour.

I eat a very healthy vegetarian diet of fish, mixed grains, legumes, yogurt, cheeses, vegetables etc and take Milk Thistle, sometimes vitamin c, chaste berry for PMT, and another liver supplement (cant remember what).

Can anyone suggest a conclusive test for rulling out/confiming Jaundice?
Also a conclusive test for ruling out/confirming liver disease?

By clay-colored stools, do you mean on the grayish or whitish side? If so, did you mention it to your doctor? The brown color in a stool is due to the 'disgestion' of some of the bile that you secrete into the small intestine. If the bile isn't being secreted properly, if the duct is spasming or blocked, it can cause a lot of problems.

If you haven't discussed the pale stools with your doc, please call him/her. And make sure to mention the tea-colored urine. This isn't something to be overlooked.
