High enzyme (alt), normal ultrasound, still having pain

by atldianabryant, Feb 02, 2009 12:58PM
Hello,

I'm 26 years old, pretty healthy lifestyle (work out, weight around 138lbs, 5.6"). I gave birth to my daughter 7 months ago.
Around two months after having my baby, I started to get a little sharp pain around my liver/gallbladder area. The pain would be two or three times a week. I went to the doctor and we got lab work done, what showed my liver enzyme (alt) around 56 (ast was 25). The doctor ordered an ultrasound, what showed liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys in totally normal conditions. On the same day of the ultrasound, another blood work done, and the ALT went to 81 and AST to 35, with all the hepatitis test done showing negative. The doctor talked to a liver specialist and " I was suppose not to worry, because the enzymes was  just slightly elevated and the ultrasound was normal".
The last couple weeks I've felt this little dull pain around the same area, but very light, and most time is not even there and also a little bit of pain in my shoulder (mainly on the right).. and I don't know if it's because I'm constantly worried about having a problem (mental?!) or I really have a problem. I don't know what to think. My questions is if the normal ultrasound should be enough to put my mind on easy about having liver problems...  I just drink a couple of glasses red wine a week, eat pretty healthy, drink two cups of coffee in the morning, one diet coke a day, don't use any drugs and abstain 100% from alcohol during all pregnancy.

An opinion would be very appreciated! :)
thanks,
Diana Bryant.

I too have this elevated alt of 187 and right upper quad pain. I don't know where you go from here. I am in the same boat you are, they are just repeating my labs though, I haven't got the ultasound or hep screen done yet even. they say there are a lot of reasons for elevated alt's. I am a RN I am researching this thing since my labs came back on Friday and they mailed me these results, it sounds like a CT scan is next and the a liver biopsy, apperently just a needle thing not as bad as it sounds is next. If this is normal, then I don't know where you will go from here. Please cont to post I am interested in what you find. I do feel confident in telling you that you should continue to press for an answer but don't worry yourself to death. Also make sure you are not taking any meds that effect the liversearch meds liver damage on the net you will find lists.
