How can i stop IBS?

by olgitta, Jul 22, 2009 05:56AM
My mum's life has been turned upside down. She have visited around 25 doctors and none were able to diagnose her. She also did many tests and colonoscopies, and nothing appeared to be wrong. One of the doctors even stopped her from eating wheat; thinking it was celiac disesase, but the symptoms remained. She has diarrhea, stomach aches, and gas. She goes to the toilet more than 12 times a day. The last doctor she visited diagnosed her with irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea, but does not know what to do. Can you please tell me what medication she can take that will cure her from IBS-diarrhea and a treatment plan that will help her get better? Thank you.

She can try low-fructose diet for 2-3 days. This means avoiding all fruits and fruit products, honey, and all other food products containing fructose, sorbitol or HFCS.

Imodium Anti-Diarrhea Medication has helped me a lot with this, and you can buy it over the counter.  My sons had to have their colons removed and were having up to 20 BM's a day and this is what the doctor recommended for them also.  Make sure your mother is staying hydrated with gatorade, orange juice and bananas.  This much diarrhea can deplete your system of potassium and electrolytes, which can lead to other problems, and these 3 things replenish your system quickly.  Hope this helps.

Imodium as mammo suggested, does help.

Although it didn't seem to help me.. maybe she could try the "BRAT" diet, Bananas, Rice, Apple, Toast, along with increasing water to keep hydrated.
