I have been hungry constantly (can't fill my appetite) since March 2009. Food sometimes make the hunger go away briefly. The hunger is sometimes painful
too. I have done blood work (to check for diabetes, my thyroid etc) - everything is good. I've also checked for ulcers - I'm good there too. I'm 22 years old, weigh 164 and I'm 6' 2". I usually eat regular, well-balanced meals. Since the hunger started, I've been eating a lot more - sometimes when I'm eating the hunger stops, but it returns in full force as soon as I'm done eating. I've been eating 5 BIG meals every day and can't gain any weight. Sometimes I can eat upwards of two pounds without stopping! Hungry all day, when I wake up, when I go to sleep.
I've seen three physicians, no one has been able to help. It's very frustrating. Should I see some kind of specialist or am I seeing the wrong doctors? Does anyone know anything about this? I saw the post from someone who has had this condition for 12 years - I've only had it for a few months and it's already driving me crazy. I'm DESPERATE!
Would an appetite suppressant work (or is that totally nuts)?
Search my other posts. I've had what you describe for years. I used to think mine was hunger. No one can seem to explain, but we all have one thing in common
. Hunger pain, acid. I'd over eat until I was packed stretched tight to relieve the hunger, when for me at least the hunger is really stomach discomfort unrelated to needing or wanting food. I didn't know that before.
I don't know what advice to give you but I'm trying the opposite now of my urge
Well, I don't know, but I am glad to know I am not alone, I have had almost constant hunger for a few years now, misery at it's best. I can't leave the house without packing a lunch to disrupt the sudden intense gnawing in upper right abdominal area, not really my stomach, I have not felt hunger in my stomach since this started. I guess it's called the epigastrum area. I eat constantly to stop the gnawing and because of the sensation thought I may have a parasite or bacteria. I was tested for H.pylori and was told it was negative and also had a stool sample evaluated cause I have dogs who were treated for Ghiardia and roundworm. No such luck. Not that I want a parasite but it would have taken care of the problem if that had been the case. I have not gained or lost weight but eat two to three times what i used to. It is embarrassing because i will have such a sudden concentrated gnawing in one spot probably not bigger than a quarter that I feel like I will pass out from it if I don't get something substantial into my system. In the past it has made me feel shakey (shaky) and weak and slightly disoriented and caused something like a panic attack. I carry granola bars and milk or yogurt everywhere I go since you can't very well pull out a sandwhich in front of co-workers and these things can be carried inconspicuously. I was also tested for hypoglycemia using a glycometer at home, it never went under 70 or above 140 except once I tested myself right after eating a doughnut and it was 158 but went back down to 130 (within about a half hour when I tested again.) Anyway this isn't taken care of by a piece of candy it is always there along with loose mustard colored stools and I wake up with a heat sensation in upper right abdomen, not like internal stomach or esophogus acid burning but actual heat and sometimes it spreads to upper back and shoulders and makes me feel really weak and sick like I will faint from it,.this is quickly subdued by kefir or yogurt. Also I get an occassional sensation like having a clamp on upper right of liver area and gall bladder area. Had an ultrasound of whole abdomenal (abdominal) cavity. Apparently it looked good. I recently took some digestive enzymes and it all felt a bit better, actually gone for a few hours. Such relief from having such a chronic annoyance. The effects don't last more that a few hours though. It almost feels like peroxide is gnawing away in upper right area. Not really pain and no burning, but sort of subdued gnawing agony. I do remember the onset of all of these symptoms. It happened in the middle of the night, I have never been a big milk drinker, as a kid it made me sick, but I woke in the middle of the night with such an intense horrible sensation and I don't know why I had such an urgency for the milk but I did. I flew to the refridgerator and slammed milk straight from the gallon jug in a frenzy. And everytime I went back to bed that night that same urgency to slam milk returned within a short time, I drank the whole gallon over about five hours. Now I am completely dependant on dairy to alleviate this in the event that I can't get to a big meal. And it does not completely eradicate it, it only tides me over until i can get some heavy food into my system. Also really hot or really cold things in smaller amounts, like soup or a scoop of icecream will help significantly in the event that a lot of food can't be consumed.Milk still works but not as well. I am praying that this will not last a lifetime.
Ok hi everyone been ready through the posts. I am 52 years old and just recently started having these severe hunger pains. only thing is when I eat or drink anything like milk or liquid yogurt it makes the pain worse. coffee tea and water seem to help some but not alot the only time it goes away for any length of time is when i have an empty stomach or lay on my stomach. But I can't go with out eating I have tried eating small meals even just plain salads that even makes the hunger pains come back even if I have an empty stomach. Some one said I had acid reflux but I don't have any heartburn and my doctor said it wasn't acid reflux and told me to eat lighter meals. but regardless of how lite a meal or how small a portion is it makes the pain worse after eating any suggestions
