i am a 34 year old female, healthy, was digonosed with panic disorder 15 years ago, i currently take prozac and xanax, (40mgprozac) .25xanax twice daily....never had any stomach problems, until i came down with a stomach bug, it lasted 6 days, with nausa, gas (growling and rumbling of stomach), a mix of diarrhea and loose stools), went to doctor, he put me on prevacid 2 weeks ago, because the gas and nasuea still stayed, now....2 weeks later, i have ocaisional naseua, still some gas, always loose stools, (light brown) and the minute i wake up in the morning i have diarrhea feeling, run to bathroom and pass loose stools (not water) just pieces that are released easily, there is not a morning that goes by that this doesnt happen, is it the previacid??, my docotor told me to wait another 2 weeks for the previcad to work, if im feeling the same go to a gastrolagist....also my throat seems closed, and i cough a little, due to it, i think that just might be my anxiety, but its getting annoying...any idea whats going on    thanks soooo much  amy

There are a variety of possibilities including gastroenteritis or  irritable bowel syndrome.

I would consider stool tests, looking for bacteria, ova and parasites to ensure this isn't causing your symptoms.  If the diarrhea continues for an extended period of time, an flexible sigmoidoscopy can be considered for further evaluation.

For the nausea and gas, an upper GI series is a reasonable test to look for any anatomical causes, ulcers or GERD.

If all the tests are negative and the symptoms continue, then you may want to consider treatment for irritable bowel syndrome - including increasing fiber agents and using antispasmodic medications.

Regarding the throat symptoms - I would consider an ENT referral for further evaluation.  GERD can cause these symptoms, but I would ensure there isn't anything more serious going on first.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

medication coated with alumimium causes constipation, medication coated with magnesium tends to cause diarhea (diarrhea).
prevacid usually cause constipation.
it is possible prevacid is reacting with the other medication you are taking.

by yoshi, Feb 04, 2004 12:00AM
why dont you call your doc who prescribed prozac and ask if prevacid is not acting well with your prescription drug??

by yoshi, Feb 04, 2004 12:00AM
it does not take 2 weeks for prevacid to take effect.
prevacid is a strong drug for treating acid reflux, are you taking 30mg??

by amiala, Feb 04, 2004 12:00AM
ive been taking prozac for 11 years, there is no drug interction with the prevacid, my doctor said the prevacid should take 3 weeks to start working, im on 30mg a night, but my concerns are mostly from the loose stools, and nasuea, i cut out caffine, yesterday, will i need tests...im really afraid of hospitals, thank you...amy

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time, Amiala. You might want to take a look at the letter trail that I started under my name, rick61, and the heading - Candiasis. You definitely need to embark on some extensive testing to try and find out what is going as suggested by the doctor's answer to your email. Just to let you know, I was going through the toughest case of watery diarrhea anyone ever experienced, until I tried Primal Defense. You can find it by looking it up on the internet or visiting a good health food store. I bet you anything, combining Primal Defense with some Fibercon or Metamucil will bring you back to normal very quickly. Right now, I'm taking 10 Primal Defense tablets daily. 5 tablets an hour before lunch and dinner. A high protein/low carb diet for a while would also be of some benefit.

Is is safe; no worry. On the Colonscopy, make sure that you tell your doctor that you want to be put to sleep COMPLETELY. I had the procedure done, and I was about 95% out of it, but it was still painful. Make sure they put you all the way out. Nothing to worry..it's exactly like putting your head down at night and going to sleep. You will like the feeling.

Not to add to your problems, but taking xanax for anxiety is like making a deal with the devil. Xanax will make you feel better in the short run but will cause your anxiety to become much worse and more overwhelming in the long run. I've used this stuff for years off and on and now have anxiety worse than ever before. I suggest anyone using this drug read this article:

http://www.benzo.org.uk/xanax3.htm

I think the brain overcompensates to fight the effects of the drugs and that causes the worsening of the anxiety. I'm not taking xanax anymore and using drug-free techniques to control my panic attacks and anxiety. Positive thinking and therapy does wonders for this problem.
