I have non-ulcer dyspepsia.

I have non-ulcer dyspepsia.

Back on May 12 2008 my life changed. I was 17 years old. I got sick to my stomach and I couldn't eat anything for 2 weeks. I never puked but it was worse than any stomach flu I ever had. I felt like I had something living in my stomach that wanted to get out ... like a stomach burster. These symptoms eased up but they never went away. I was miserable every day with this discomfort in my stomach. I can no longer eat certain foods I used to like. If I eat pizza I will be nauseous the next day. I can't eat avocados or refried beans (bye, taco bell). If I get stressed out I start having stomach cramps.

I looked for the right medicine and I was finally prescribed pantoprazole 40 mg, once a day. It takes a while to start working but it controls your symptoms. If I'm having a bad day I take some Pepto-Bismol. If I run out omeprazole works short term when I take a double dose (40 mg). A couple of days I have done yoga positions designed for people with gas or IBS and they helped a little too. With non-ulcer dyspepsia, whatever helps a little helps a lot.

It took 4 months to finally get an upper GI fluoroscopy to find out what I have. That was the funnest part (sarcasm). I found myself looking forward to my next doctor appointment and I would get angry at the receptionist if she scheduled the next appointment more than 2 weeks in the future. Finally I was told today what I had suspected all along.

To anyone else that has or should get non-ulcer dyspepsia: Try not to get depressed. Try to continue in your hobbies and get new hobbies if you can't do your old ones. Eventually your symptoms will improve. The hardest part is learning that you have to live with this. Eventually you will learn to cope. It might take long, but you will get used to it. You will have good days and bad days, but enjoy the good days. Your life will improve. Someday, maybe in 20 years, maybe in 2 years, medicine will find a treatment for this condition. Until then you have to find a treatment of your own that works for you.
