If Reglan has been recalled why do doctors still precribe it?
I have been diagnosed with gasterioparisis for the past 10+ years. I was given Reglan for 8 of those years with the last few having to go into the hospital every two weeks or less for two years!! My GI took me off reglan and I was not to return to the hospital for at least a six to nine month stint after stopping the Reglan. I was recently in the hospital and was appallled that the ER doc tried to give me Reglan and then told me to take my own pain medication while being hooked up to an IV. I was appalled at the doctor and told the Chief of ER at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue and he said that it was "normal" practice to keep costs down. (At that time I had private insurance, so cost for him and for me was never an issue!!) Should I persue this further?? This all sounds very wrong to me!! (After being a "frequent flier" at Overlake for the past 7 years.) What is normal protocal?
Thanks,

Welcome to the gastroenterology community! I think the current recommendation for Reglan in the US is that it is approved for use for 3 months. Longer than 3 months use and it can cause problems (which I'm sure you've heard about). Doctors still prescribe it and are allowed to. What happened with me is that my doctor put me on Reglan to see if it would help and then once we concluded that this type of medicine would help she switched me to Domperidone (part of a FDA trial, so it is legal). The pain med thing you talk about though doesn't seem normal to me.
