Many causes can lead to an increase in liver enzymes. I would consider initial tests such as an abdominal ultrasound and blood tests looking for viral hepatitis. More specialized tests can be considered - such as an ANA level or ferritin level (looking for autoimmune hepatitis and hemochromatosis respectively).
If the ALT continues to rise, a liver biopsy can be considered for a more definitive diagnosis.
