Increased bilirubin

by mandarmn, Oct 04, 2009 11:57AM
Last year during the rainy season, I experienced severe abdominal problem. The symptoms included burning sensation in stomach (acidity), nausea, breathlessness(which cleared after belching), and general sense of distress (increased fear). I had mild (< 100 F) to no fever. I had a diagnosis based on the following:
1. High bilirubin (2), which after 4 months fell below 1.
2. Low vitamin B12  (I am vegetarian)

The symptoms slowly subsided (in 2 months), although the doctor didn't reveal the exact cause.
The problem I currently face is that the symptoms return repeatedly (haven't seen any patterns for recurrence), albeit mildly. Usually I am fit, engage in all normal activities, and full of life. But on the days this problem returns, I get a very uncomfortable sensation that last for a few hours (uneasiness, loads of belching).

The queries I have in mind are:
1. What was/is the disease? What tests should I undergo so that I can confirm that?
2. Is it with me for life, or is it curable? I need to know because of the sensation of fear that accompanies the symptoms.
3. Why did the bilirubin increase and then subside? Is it a liver problem?

I plan to meet my gastroenterologist, but have his appointment after a fortnight. I would like to discuss the case with him, and I need some inputs that will help me pose the right questions.

Thanks and regards,
Mandar

A point I forgot to mention
I had NO abdominal pain during the entire phase. It was just the belching and burning sensation.

Thanks and regards,
