Intenstinal Scar Tissue

by NYRR, Jan 29, 2007 12:00AM
I'm a 45 year old male in relatively good health.  I exercise regularly and try to eat the right foods.  I suffer from GERD in which I take Prevacid for.

About a month ago I had a day of diarrhea and vomiting.  Might’ve been related to something I ate or drank the night before or a virus.  After this day my stomach didn't seem to  resolve itself over time.

I now have on and off cramping below the belly button and sometimes above. I also feel nausea at times, and at least 2-3 bowel movements a day.  My normal was one.  My doctor did a stool sample and other test which were negative.  I had an Endoscopies done two weeks ago  which was negative.  I had a Colonoscopy done last week which only showed some scar tissue.  My doctor felt it wasn't anything to worry about except for maybe increase cramps and gas, some pulling but  didn't seem that concern.  My concerns that one day this can lead to a bowel obstruction.  Which now leads me to my questions.

1) Can Scar tissue cause the problems I been experiencing?

2)  Does Scar Tissues get worst in time?

3)  Is there anyway to treat Scar tissue without a surgical option? i.e., Physical Therapy, etc.

4)  Are there things I should avoid or eat that can further aggravate this?

5)  Are there tings I can do to limit the scar tissue.

6)  Are there things I should avoid for not making scar tissue   getting worst?

7)  Can other organs be affected?

8)  Should I go for further tests?

Sorry for all the questions, Thanks!

To answer your questions:
1) It is possible that the scar tissue can lead to the symptoms.

2) Possibly, but it is impossible to predict.

3) Surgery can treat the scar tissue if it is causing obstruction or refractory symptoms.

4) I am not aware of scar tissue leading to dietary restrictions.

5) Finding out the cause can be helpful.  Once this is done, treating or avoiding the cause can be attempted.

6) Again, avoiding the cause to prevent progression can be done.

7) Scar tissue is normally caused from prior surgery or trauma.  It is unlikely to spread.

8) Imaging with a CT scan can be considered.  To further evaluate the GERD, a 24-hr pH study can be done as the next step.

These questions can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
