All of these symptoms seem to occur mostly around or during my period, though there have been times when they have occurred throughout the month as well. The severity of my symptoms, and their frequency, seem to happen in bouts (sometimes I will go a few months with minimal symptoms, but then they return for long, extended periods of time (several months to a year or more)).
Tests that I have had done (that I can remember) include x-rays, endoscopy, colonoscopy, CT scan with barium contrast, external and internal ultrasounds, rectal exams, and stool and blood tests to test for bacteria and toxins (as well as heavy metals), all of which came back negative, aside from my internal ultrasound. My gynecologist said there were visible cysts on my ovaries, but said their presence was probably due to the fact I was going to start my period soon.
I have also attempted to alter my diet (eating healthier, as well as going on a fiber diet), which did little, if anything, to alleviate my symptoms. I have also been on various medications, including those for Acid Reflux. Birth control, in both pill form and the depo shot, didn't seem to help much either.
Both my mother and my grandmother have had endometriosis, the former of which has had a hysterectomy. Despite this, my gynecologist didn't believe it was likely for me to have endometriosis because of my age (I was 17 at the time), and as a result didn't believe it would be necessary to have a laparoscopy done.
The severity of the symptoms progressed with the years (it started with stomach pain and diarrhea, and then evolved into the other symptoms listed), and have caused me to do very poorly in middle school and high school, particularly because of numerous absences. Now it is affecting my work life, but I have little choice but to work regardless of the pain. Unfortunately I do not have the health insurance to consult doctors and specialists further on the matter.
Despite my young age (from what I understand endo is more common in women ages 25-40?), could it be entirely possible I have endometriosis, intestinal or not, rather than IBS (which I have been previously diagnosed with)?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice any of you may offer.
