Is Prilosec safe for children?

by Shelly Sorem, Nov 15, 2000 12:00AM
My 5 year old daughter has been diagnosed with reflux since age 6 months.  She recently received an endoscopy and a colonoscopy.  The results showed that she has a hiatal hernia.  She has been prescribed with 10 mg of Prilosec to be taken twice a day.  Since this is the same dosage given to adults is it safe for a 5 year old who weighs 37 lbs and can it be taken long-term?

Dear Shelly,
We are adult gastroenterologists. I am afraid that we have no experience with 5 yr old children.

Hello -
My daughter has been diagnosed with acid reflux.  She has been suffering for several years with stomach discomfort/pain.  She had an upper GI which indicated a possible duodenal ulcer (however, since has healed), and this past summer she had an endoscopy which showed irritation to the lining at the upper end of her stomach.  She is 7-1/2 years old and unfortunately has inherited her father's stomach problems.  She is also under the care of an allergist, with preliminary tests indicating a dairy intolerance which may be irritating what she already has.  My daughter takes 2/3 teas. liquid zantac a.m. and p.m. every day, is on a total dairy free diet and over the summer was placed on 10 mg prilosec (which by the way is the children's dose.  20 mg is the adult dose [which is what I take])  I was very surprised and relieved at how well she took to the prilosec.  It's been 3 mos. now and was told to go off (understandably so, why should a young child have to take these kind of medicines)  You are welcome to contact me if you would like to further talk about our children.  Please feel free to e-mail me at:  ***@****
Regards,
Janice Tepper
