Is this IBS?

by DevTown99, May 15, 2007 12:00AM
Hi Doc,

I'm a 24 yr old male. Over the past couple months I have noticed some irregularly in bowel movements. Sometimes I can eat anything I want and other times the slightest thing will wreck my stomach. Anyway, I have noticed alternating constipation and diarrhea. Or, diarrhea one day of the week followed by 1- 2 weeks of regular stools.

I don’t know if this makes a difference but both my parents are diagnosed with slight IBS. Also, I have been under some stress over the past year with a new job, etc… As far as my health goes I've had a yearly physical last October and everything was fine except for my T4 thyroid function – a little elevated.

My question is simple, does this sound like IBS or something more serious I should be concerned about?

Thanks!

IBS is certainly possible.  However, before attributing it to this, you may want to investigate more serious causes.

This can include an infection, inflammatory bowel disease or colitis.  Obtaining a stool test to rule out infection or malabsorption can be considered.  A colonoscopy can also be done to evaluate for inflammatory bowel disease.

If the tests are non-revealing, then treatment for IBS can be optimized.  Anti-spasmodic agents and dietary fiber are normal initial treatments.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
