for her ongoing battle with constipation. She has been diagnosed with STC and has exhausted all her medical options--the meds work for awhile and then stop working. She is 24, and has had this problem for years. The idea is that it is better to have the surgery now, while she is young and healthy and her pelvic
floor is still strong. She will have a series of preoperative tests, and then surgery to remove her entire colon, whereupon her small intestine witll be attached to her rectum, is how it was described to me.
She tells me that at no time did her doctor mention a colostomy
diseases. It seems like one morearea where she could have complications, which is one of my major concerns about the surgery (among many).
We will meet with the doctor after my daughter has had the preliminary tests. (So far only my daughter has met with her). I'd like to know what kind of questions to ask. My daughter is gung-ho to get this over with and not very patient with my mother-hen attitude, but I think the more we know the better position we'll be in to make decisions and deal with what comes our way.
A j-pouch can be done. It's something that should be discussed since there can be pro's and con's depending upon the individual.
Please make sure that the transit rate of her small intestine has been thoroughly checked out. There are individuals who go into the sugery with this problem - and it has not been checked - and they continue to have problems.
