LIver fibrosis or cirrhosis?

by Sam200819, Jul 03, 2009 11:20AM
Dear Doctor,

I suspect I have alcoholic liver disease for a little over two years now but can't get my doctor to do a liver biopsy. I was a heavy daily drinker (1/2 half to 1 and 1/2 half bottle of wine) for about three years. I quit two years ago when I found out that I was pregnant and delivered a healthy baby. I did not have any serious withdrawal symptoms. Since the pregnancy and the birth of my child I have never had any alcohol again. During the pregnancy I developed many spider angiomas (1-2mm,mostly arms and hands)  which made me believe that I had a serious liver problem. I have had two ultrasounds (negative), a cat scan (negative) and six lft's, CBC's, PT/INR, Lipase, Amylase etc. which all came back normal except that my alt always runs a little lower. My Gastro doctor is not concerned about that and doesn't think I have a liver problem and is 100% sure that these small red dots (spiders) are pregnancy related. I also experience pain in my ruq from time to time which feels like a pulling sensation that radiates to the back. Is it possible that I have alcoholic liver disease although all testings are normal? Can someone with alcoholic liver disease get pregnant and have a normal pregnancy? Would fibrosis or cirrhosis be picked up on an US or Ct scan? Can I insist on a liver biopsy? Is there any serious risks involved with a biopsy? I feel very lost and can't even enjoy my baby because of all of this. Thank you.
