Large Hiatal hernia

Yesterday I had an endoscopy done. They found that I have a large hiatal hernia. My follow up appointment isn't for 5 months. What I'm wondering is if they will recommend surgery to correct this?

I'm having other problems right now that don't even make me think about the hiatal hernia. I have had it for years and it didn't bug me much besides a bit of reflux, I was prescribed nexium for that. I generally have a fairly healthy diet anyways since I was a gym rat so it didn't really seem to present many problems. If it bugs you a lot I would suggest talking to your Dr. about it and see what they recommend. It seems to me that generally they don't like to do surgery unless absolutely necessary with hiatal hernias. If yours can be controlled by diet and occassional medication I would go that route. Also try strengthening/tigthening up your abdominal area this might help a bit. If it is slipping through then they will consider surgery.

Thank you. That helps. So you're just controlling it through diet and medication?

I have a decent sized hiatal hernia as well and the doctor said they generally don't like to correct it with surgery unless absolutely necessary. I'm not certain why but maybe you should change your follow up to a closer time if it's bugging you.
