Left leg/ankle swelling (edema)?

I started experiencing left ankle swelling about a year/ago and stopped drinking almost immediately when I suspected that could be a more serious/symptom of alch liver disease.

Anyway, I have continued to experience this and just in the last week it became much worse and pronounced. Very painful and much more swollen. Still haven't drank since and don't understand the primarily left side swelling. Read many things that for ALD, that this should really be unilateral.

Have had muliple missed Doc appointments in last several months with a busy schedule.

Suspect it's Alch Cirrh, but curious if anyone have seen anything like this?

Just because you drank regularly do not automatically assume this may be liver related, or even related to drinking. It could be heart related, BP related, lung related or even a tumor pressing on the Iliac vein.  Or something less ominous.  
I mention the various ominous ones (if untreated) because you need to determine WHAT is the cause so you can treat it before damage occurs.
As am RN let me tell everyone that similar symptoms can often be from different organs.  Never assume it is the obvious body system.
