Liver cyst question

by gayegjones, Jul 11, 2007 12:00AM
I had a CT scan this past weekend and blood work done since I went to the ER complaining of abdominal and back pain.  I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and am feeling much better.  They did find a 1/2 inch cyst on my liver which my internist wants to do an MRI on.  My blood work all looks good.  She says that she sees them all the time and that I should not worry, but I am just scared because I never even knew these things existed.  Should I have any concern?

I agree with the MRI.  Most liver cysts are benign, however cancer needs to be definitively ruled out.  The MRI would give information that cannot be elucidated on the CT scan.

If the liver cyst is benign, it can be observed via serial imaging studies.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Thank you, Dr. Pho, for your reply.  I got the MRI results and all looks just fine - just a few simple cysts which we'll keep track of.  Thanks for your help so much...Gaye

My son was born with gastroscesis. At birth he had his appendix and 2 1/2 inches of his small intestence out. 4 years after birth, the doc. seen he had a cyst in his liver duct. It was removed and the duct was reconstructed with his own body. This way we didn't have to worry about a stent. He was fine with reflux and stomach problems since then, but the past 5 days he has been complaining of an upset stomach and diarrehea. he is 6 years old. His stools are pastel weather it is brown, green, or yellow. JUST VERY LIGHT COLORED ALL THE TIME. I am wondering if I should have him tested like a ginny pig to make sure everything is still in place and ok. Is what he is experiencing normal?
