Liver studies

by RonnyL, Jul 07, 2004 12:00AM
I am a 44 year old female and I have been on Lipitor 20 mg.and aspirin 81 mg.daily for almost three months due to hyperlipidemia and a family history of CAD. My most recent liver labs with reference ranges are as follows:
TBil 0.7(0.0-1.2mg/dL)
Alkp 70(0-136 U/L)
SGPT 23(0-40 U/L)
SGOT 24(0-40 U/L)
LDH 200 (0-230 U/L)

My lipid profile is now within the desired parameters.
I wonder about the LDH level. I realize that it is within normal limits but it seems on the high side compared to the other values.I do walk about 2.5 miles three to four times/week.I also take Tylenol 500mg once or twice daily around four to five days/week.
I have had right rib pain and RUQ pain at intervals for 12 years. At its onset,I had an ultrasound and a CXR and was diagnosed with inflammation between my ribs and a lung lesion which was removed(benign). At that time, no lesions, etc. were found on my liver. Flucatations in weight seem to make a difference.I didn't mention this info to my new MD because I was asymptomatic at the time.
Should I just request a repeat on the labs in three months, especially since I'm on Lipitor? Can Lipitor affect LDH levels? Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

The liver tests are within the normal limits.  Even if the LDH is on the high-normal range, it is still normal.

Typically, liver enzymes are tested 1 month after starting the medication, then at 12 weeks and then periodically (i.e. 6-12 months afterwards).  It is possible that Lipitor can affect the LDH level.

If there continues to be RUQ pain, I would suggest an abdominal ultrasound, since gallbladder and liver diseases would be suspected in any symptoms in that area.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
