My friend has been having trouble moving his bowels.  When he's able to go, he has redish-brown stools that also contain, what appears to be, mucus (same color as the stool).  What could cause this and should he have this checked by a doctor???

When he doesn't drink or gets angry and with all those meds, stool is of normal color?

Black stool may come from meds: iron, Pepto-Bismol, (ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin, if they cause bleeding). Check for black stool in all meds description.

Other:
- food like licorice
- certain type of alcohol maybe (??)

- bleeding from esophagus or stomach - since the acid in stomach changes color of blood from red into black. Bleeding may be confirmed by simple stool test.
