Living with a J-pouch

Living with a J-pouch

I've have been living with a j-pouch for the past four years and although life is much better than living with UC I would like to improve the function of my pouch if possiable. I have 10 to 20 bowel movements in a 24 hour period. Stools range from soft to water and never have immediate urge to go loke with UC. Naturaly what I eat and how much I eat has a big effect how much I go, but because I'am a endurance cyclists riding as much as 100 miles a day I burn a lot of calories. What can I do to help reduce the number of bowel movents I have ?  Should I supplement my diet witn Boost Plus ? How much more fluid should I be drinking ?  How is my body effected by not having a colon when it comes to intence exersize ?

My son had his colon removed at 12 and is now 38.  He is a marathoner, utrathoner, mountain biker, competes in jujitsu, and an avid hiker which puts him in the middle of nowhere for weeks at a time alone.  He has a lot of endurance due to diet, and has learned what to eat and not eat to keep the BM's to a minimum.  It's not how much fluid you drink, it's the type.  You need to stay hydrated and orange juice and gatorade are the two main drinks that quickly replenish your potassium and electrolytes.  Intense exercise without a colon is only a concern with dehydration, which a very manageable.  I will send you a note to my son's website.  Since he is also a speed hiker (guess there's a joke in there!) he gets asked by people all over the country to hike with them, through his website.  I will send you a note with the website.  Please contact him regarding this, he is always open to helping others and will welcome you.  I will email him right now, so he knows to expect your email.  Take care....
