Lots and Lots of Blood

by IMABLEEDIN, Feb 24, 2002 12:00AM
I have had bleding with my bowel movements on and off for several years. Bright red blood the doc says is from the hemoroids. Sometimes I bled sometimes I didn't. About a month ago I began taking Vioxx for a bad elbow. Now I bleed A LOT every time I take a bowel movement. The water in the toilet is so full of blood the stool cant be seen. I can look between my legs while sitting on the toilet and see the blood drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip, drip into the water. When I wipe it's a big blood clot and my colon is swollen for ten minutes or so.
Anyone know if the Vioxx might be contributing to the bleeding? Also, has anyone ever heard of an herbal product called Pilex? It is advertised as a natural hemoroid remedy. Anyway, thanks everybody. I'm new here but I really like the forum.

You really should tell your doctor today about this, it could be related to the voix which has a rare but serious side effect of GI bleed. It doesn't sound too serious as blood from your stomache would be dark and not drip like that. It sound more like a hemoroid. But bleeding that much every time could give you a significant blood loss! I think you need attention right away.

The common side affects for Vioxx users include upper-respiratory infection, diarrhea, nausea and high blood pressure. Although you cannot be certain that Vioxx is causing the bleeding until you talk with your doctor, I think that you need to seek medical help as soon as possible. Hemmaroids usually do not cause bleeding of that magnitude. Also, the fact that you have seen blood in your stool off and on for a while and now it is becoming more intense is troubling. The more I think about this the more I think you need to go in and have tests such as a colonoscopy done to find the source of the bleeding before its too late.

As a matter of fact, hemmoroids (hemorrhoids) can bleed quite a bit. I used to be a nurse aide in a nursing home and many of my patients had them. I'd put them on the potty chair and then have to wipe them (these were total care patients). The blood would drip into the bucket, and it would also soak through the toilet paper. Blood from hemmoroids (hemorrhoids) is fresh and red. Blood from the stomache or "up in" the digestive tract is older and dark. Hemmoroids (hemorrhoids) in themselves are not usually serious, but they can bleed alot every day and cause an anemia. Get it checked out right away.
