Low grade upper right quadrant abdominal pain

by Dave__0__0, Nov 15, 1998 12:00AM

I am a male 43 years old with no history of abdominal problems.  For the past
6 months I have been experiencing chronic pain that originates just below the rib cage and spreads
to the right.  I have not experienced any weight loss or bloody stools.  Sometimes the pain kind of burns
and radiates along the ribs.  Some days the pain is not present. I cannot asertain whether eating makes a difference or not.
It almost feels like an adheasion when extending the abdomen if feels wierd.  I have seen a Dr. they felt like it was nothing much to worry about.
The first time I really noticed the pain as a bother was when I was taking Zyban for smoking cessation.  After the first week of taking Zyban I broke out in a rash
and became very restless and the abdominal pain was more severe than it has ever been.  I quit the Zyban and the symptoms subsided outside of the lingering off and on abdominal pain.
Also, sometimes after a meal I have the strong urge to defecate shortly after.  This comes and goes.  When I have the abdominal pain I also feel kinda lethargic.
The more I think about the pain the more troublsome it seems.  When I am busy I don't notice it much except for bouts of the pain gettign worse at about one month intervials lasting a day or so.
Any help you could give me woudl be appreciated as to what I should have done and what tests need to be done.  Thanks

Dear Dave,
There are many possible causes for abdoominal pain.  Pain uin the left upper abdomen can be due to gastric, colon or kidney problems.  Pain in the middle and right upper abdomen can be due to stomach, duodenum or gallbladder problems.  Irritable bowel syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion to be made only after other causes have been excluded.  If you rsymptoms persist, you should have a workup that includes barium studies and and an ultrasound of gall bladder and pancreas.
