Exercise stress test as well as cardiac enzymes can be drawn to evaluate any heart damage. If it has been determined that he is not having a heart attack, a stress test can be scheduled to see if there are any blockages in the arteries.
If cardiac causes have been ruled out, GI causes can include dyspepsia (i.e. ulcers, GERD, inflammation of the upper digestive tract), as well as gall bladder disease. An upper GI series, upper endoscopy or abdominal ultrasound can all be considered for further evaluation.
Pulmonary causes can also be considered - since it occurs when breathing. Serious causes can include a pulmonary embolus - i.e. a blood clot in the lung. This should also be considered and ruled out.
All of these considerations should be discussed with your personal physician. Again, if there is continuing chest pain, an ER visit may be necessary.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.
