Mucus and Blood in Stool

I am a 30-year-old woman, and over the past couple of years, I have experienced mucus in my stools from time to time. Over the past two weeks, however, I have had a substantial amount of blood showing up in my stools, as well. All I can rely on right now is forums like this, since I do not have health insurance, and therefore can't go to the doctor. I am really concerned, and I cannot afford to pay out of pocket to go to the doctor, much less for treatment. Can anyone give me an idea of what this might be? I also have mild, sporadic lower right back pain, as well as very frequent headaches. I don't know if those are related, but ...? Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  It might be hemorrhoids or an anal fissure or something worse.  Are you having any constipation?  What color is the blood?  You really need to see a doctor about this, because it could be something serious.

I agree with the above response - rectal bleeding is never normal and should always cause you to seek medical advice.  For possible causes google rectal bleeding and click on to one of the many sites - the Medicinenet site is particularly informative.

But you must seek medical advice.  This forum can enlighten you but it cannot cure you!!

Thanks so much, Guys. I really appreciate your responses. I am oddly enough, not having constipation...maybe a tad, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. The blood is bright red, which my mother-in-law told me is an indication that it's a problem just inside of the rectum, not too far up. Also, thank you for that website - I'm going to check it out. If either of you has anymore helpful advice, I am all ears.

30andWorried, because of your symptoms I would recommend seeing a doctor soon if this is still going on.
