My liver biospy tests results shows Abnormal SGOT

by Notalrightind, Jun 03, 2004 12:00AM
On October 23, 2003 I was dx with HCV. I am a 60 year old woman.I also have insulin dependent diabetes and high chlesterol. My doctor took me off all medicine except Insulin to find out why my liver enzymes kept going.  On May 12, 2004 I had a liver biospy.  The recent tests results showed, My CBC(blood count is Normal, My SGOT is Abnormal, My Alpha-fetoprotein (tumor marker) is Normal. Comments: Liver biospy revealed scar tisue to be around a 2 on a scale of 1-4, with 4 being cirrhosis or a lot of scar tissue. I recommended you seriously consider treatment with combination therapy to attempt to eradicate the hepatitisd C virus.
Since I have scar tissue on a scale of 2, should I begin treatment with combination therapy now or wait 6 months?. Because I work in a very high stress area Job,I am afraid I will get to sick to do my job.  Also What king of Dx would I give at work to let personnel know I need to take a Family Medical Leave? I am very scare and confussed.  HCV has a negative meaning to lots of people.  Please help me.

Thank You So Much For Being Here For People Sick And Afraid.

As a general rule, patients who are considered for treatment should have histologic and virologic evidence of chronic infection (ie, HCV RNA detectable in serum) and an elevated serum ALT.  If this is your case, then treatment should be considered (you did not provide data regarding the viral load and the ALT level).  The liver biopsy itself should not be the main determinant of whether you should start treatment or not.

As for the diagnosis for the FMLA - I would suggest you discuss this with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
