I am a 54 yo female.  For the last 5-6 years I have had occasional cramps in my throat when I eat.  It doesn't seem to matter what I eat.  It can be chicken or gravy or rice or noodles.  Half way through the meal it seems like the food just stops going down.  Then I get horrible chest pains and my mouth starts to salivate and I go in the bathroom and wind up vomiting.  I have told my dr about this and all they say is "yeah it sounds like esophegeal cramps to me".  What is that?  Does it lead to anything else?  Is there anything I can do to stop it?  Some one please help me where my dr's didn't.

Ask your doc to refer you to a GI person and ask that doc to do a upper endoscopy and check your esophagus via manometry for motility problems. This isn't something that should be dismissed without fully checking it out.

Before you can do anything about it, you have to know what you're dealing with. So ask to get that done.
