Nausea for over a year

by shannon357, Oct 19, 2008 07:41PM
I've been sick for over a year now and the doctors cannot figure out what is wrong.  In August of 2007 I started to feel sick with abdominal pain and constant nausea but I just thought it was a virus.  I started seeing doctors a little while after and received an upper endoscopy.  They discovered candida (a yeast infection) in my esophagus.  I received medicine and for about a week I felt as good as new.  Then I started to feel sick again and we did another upper endoscopy to see if the candida was still present.  It wasn't but I did have a great deal amount of mucus that had to be sucked out of my esophagus.  They contributed the nausea to the mucus, which started to accumulate again short after.  I have so much mucus in my throat I have to constantly go to a bathroom to spit it out.  Since my stomach was also a symptom and I had diarrhea on a daily basis, we did some more tests including an abdominal ultrasound, barium series, and other tests.  They determined I could have GERD and immediatly put me on Nexium.  This, however, made me sicker than ever and I eventually got off it.  I also lost a lot of weight and my period stopped coming.  (I was, and am, not pregnant).  I gained back the weight but my period was still not coming.  I went to the gynocolgist and they determined it was possible I could have PCOS and they just put me on the pill.  Since we still did not know what was causing the nausea and stomach pain, I took a lactose test where you blow in the tube and a number shows up.  The number was apparently way too high before I even drank the formula.  They determined that this meant there was bacteria in my small intestines, most likely H. Pylori.  I took medicine for that but noticed no difference whatsoever.  The GI doctor I was seeing ultimatly determined it was all stress-related and prescribed me Xanax.  I refuse to take it because I feel as though the doctor just gave up on me because he couldn't come up with a real diagnosis.  An ENT doctor determined the excess mucus was just due to the fact that some people produce more mucus than others.  He ruled out post-nasal drip and did not believe it was allergy-related.  He aslo said he did not believe it was the cause of the nausea.  It seems I've hit a wall and don't really know what to do.  I never feel like going out or truly living my life becuase I'm always sick.  I really just want to get to the bottom of this and start getting out of my house and actually making something out of my life and not just be a hermit.  Please help me and tell me any tests I could maybe look into or any suggestions of what this could be.

Additional Facts: I have Celiac Disease but have been on a strict gluten free diet for over 10 years now.  I also get headaches a lot and I'm always tired.

Shannon--I recently found out I have celiac--after endocopies that showed gastritis--barretts esophagus and diverticulosis--Through a TTGA blood test they found I had celiac--I was a sick puppy for a long time--and funny thing was all I wanted to eat was shredded wheat-The very thing making me sick-Isnt that something? It caused more things than I thought it could--aching muscles and joints--irritability. I also found out I am hypothyroid which makes you very tired and cant lose a pound--and didnt even when I was living on cereal and swimming everyday.--That stress blaming thing makes me so mad--who wouldnt be stessed from worry--but it isnt causing the illness.I bought 4 books on celiac--It can take a long time to recover--and if enough diverticuli are destroyed in intestines--you can get sick eating darn near everything.Have you had your thyroid checked??? If not do so--I am in bed watching movies most of the time--just flat--dont care about nothing--takes to much effort--Get the Celiac Bible if you can. I take vitamins and enzymes from health food store--Im sick of these Drs/specialists--so I too am at a brick wall.My suggestion is thyroid check and also a panel on vitamins--to see if you are deficient in anything--Unfortunately these demons rarely arrive alone--so get a Dr who will listen to your concerns--Tell them what you want--I have a woman Dr(just a regular medical Dr) who basically does what I ask her--but I have to research to kno what to ask for.Everytime she orders tests there is something else to deal with. I have been up a couple hours and want to go back to bed-I have little appetite till my blood sugar drops--and have to eat---Dont feel alone--ok? Keep in touch

My son has also been nauseated, abdominal pain for several months straight.  When doctors couldn't figure it out, they figured it  was anxiety and sent him to a psychologist.

The psychologist is great.  She confirmed it not anxiety and is pushing his doctors to send him to a cardiologist.  He does have a low pulse, in the fifties.  Which, when he sleeps could be even lower.  After googling his symptoms under heart conditons, it looks like we are heading in the right direction.  I never even considered the heart causing the nausea.

Look into it.

not too much luck yet. im feeling better than i used to and am now able to live my life without as many concerns.  I took flagyl because i researched and thought i had giardia and made my dr put me on it since sometimes the tests come back negative when they are really positive. it has helped but im still not back to normal. ive pretty much given up researching on my own and am just thankful im not anywhere near how i used to be. my headaches are gone and im feeling more energized than i used to. im hoping things will continue to heal on their own since i go away to college in the fall and im extremely nervous ill always be getting sick there :/
as for the celiac disease thing, theyve determined its not the cause and i stick to a very strict glutenfree diet. ive also gotten my thyroid checked and everything seemed normal.
and ive never looked into heart problems. what kind of problems do they think your son has?

ps. its really relieving to see im not alone and i pray that one day i can live like a completely normal kid not worried about my stomach constantly. my only advice for everyone is that if you think the drs wrong (ex. hes saying its stress and you dont believe it) stick with your gut feeling and dont take no as an answer. drs arent always right and can easily miss something. just dont give up! and let me know whats happening with you guys too!
