Nausea

by lchelsemom, Jul 30, 2005 12:00AM
I am 55 year old female who is experiencing nausea on regular basis.  I have had ruptured appendix, gall bladder removal, and complete hysterectomy all before the age of 40.

I have B12 malabsorption problem receiving shots regularly - the level has recently been about 210 although for many years with shots, I was at 1000. None of the Dr's has been able to tell me what is causing my B12 to go down so much.

I have acid reflux and probable  IBS.  I have been experiencing extreme nausea to the point of vomiting although I don't vomit all the times I feel nausea.  I carry a towel with me in the car so if I need to pull off the road and become sick (which has happened)  will have it.  I am on Protonix (worked better than prevacid) 1x per day.  On many days I need to take another Protonix during the day.  Yesterday I could have used a third Protonix but I was afraid to take.

I had colonoscopy and endoscopy about a month and endo. was normal.  I did have a polyp in colon that was biopsied and I will need to repeat colon. in a year.

What could be causing nausea?  Although I take a number of medications none have been changed recently.  I also have many allergies but I have changed nothing in my day-to-day routine.

What could be causing such extreme nausea over a long period of time?

Thank you.

There can be many reasons leading to nausea.  The upper endoscopy would rule out most of the more common causes, such as inflammation of the upper digestive tract, an ulcer or an obstruction.

You can consider more specialized testing for the nausea, including a gastric emptying scan looking for gastroparesis, or esophageal motility studies looking for any dysmotility disorders.

A 24-hr pH study can be considered to definitively evaluate for GERD.  You can also consider liver function tests to suggest if there is any pathology of the biliary ducts.  An MRCP can be obtained for further evaluation of this possibility.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
