Need liver transplant

by Isa__0, Oct 11, 1998 12:00AM
My father needs a liver transplant within 3 months.  Since I am from Oman we do not have transplantaion done in my country.  We went to Europe but we found there is no hope for us over there.  Please if you know how we can get the transplant in USA or have any information that can help us in getting the transplant done in USA I will be very happy since I am losing hope when I try to contact hospitals in other countries.
  Thank you very much.

Dear Issa:
I was very touched by your letter and I would like to give you as much information as possible to help you.  Certainly there are a large number of centers in the US doing liver transplant and they are all in a position to do a small number of patients who live abroad.
It would be helpful for me to know what your father’s underlying liver condition is and why the European Centers turned your father down.  If there are legitimate medical reasons for not doing the transplant (such as a bad heart or having cancer outside the liver), these would also potentially be a problem in the US.  If there are financial obstacles, these obstacles would also come up in the US.  Liver transplant is so expensive that few centers can absorb the cost of a transplant by themselves.  However, there are often ways to overcome some financial obstacles and I have talked about them before in MedHelp.
Perhaps the thing to do at this time is for you to contact me with more information regarding your father.  You may want to call my office or FAX material to me.  Otherwise you can post more material through MedHelp.  I hope this information is helpful to you.  The direct number to our liver clinic is: (313) 916-8865 and our FAX is (313) 916-9487.  At Henry Ford we have a very active liver transplant program.
