Nissen Fundiplication for LPR Gerd

by NoodleHead1, Oct 08, 2007 09:16AM
Hi,

I am trying to decide if I should go forward with the Nissen Fundiplication surgery for laryngitis gerd.

I am 41, female and in good health. I have had LGERD symptoms of hoarse voice, sore throat and an inability to clear my throat for 10+ years. I don't have any heartburn symptoms. None of the medications have helped. Protonix used to help but I am now on 2 a day with mo relief. I have had all the tests and my GI (2 opinions) say that surgery is the last try for me.

My questions are:
What are the repercussions of not being able to belch or vomit if my body needs to? (ie. flu, food poisoning etc.)
Do you know what percentage of people with LPR experience relief from the procedure?
Thanks for your help.

I have had the Nissen Fundiplication surgery but have had some problems such as being able to belch and having excessive gas.  As far as not being able to vomit, believe me if you get sick enough, you can vomit.  However, sometimes gas pains outweigh the acid reflux, but all in all, I guess having gas is better than having more severe problems.

Thanks for responding Liz.
I would be so greteful if you would answer a couple more questions.
Did you have LPR gerd?
Have you actually every vomited?
And do you just have gas pains or are you passing gas a lot too?
Thanks

Hi, my name is Leslie and i have had nissen fundipliation surgery in 2003. Even since surgery all I do is burp as soon as I lay down.  If i fall to sleep before I have burped from all the pressure I wake up in the morning with severe pain in my throut.  I have went back to the dr. in seattle to see if maybe it had tightened the wrap to much and he would not touch me. He said originally when I was asking if he would do the surgery that because I had fibromynalgia he did not want to do surgery because he did not know how someone with that could handle the paid.  Well, after crying because I was in so much paid he decided he would do surgery for me.  But, I never knew he would not help after with the burping problem.  I have read many articles on this surgery and all articles seem to go back to the fact that the wrap is to tight. So, I will keep trying. But this surgery has been very hard to deal with.  The burping every day gets to be unbearable to deal with.  Also, every so many months I get severe coughing that no matter what I take it just keeps staying.  Can anyone help.

You may have had your surgery already, but this is my first time on this website. I had a Nissen wrap in 2004 and the only problem is not being able to throw up. If you get the flu from someone, you might end up going to the E.R. and getting a shot for nausea if you do not have any good nausea pills or suppositories on hand. I am able to belch now, but no hoarseness, no cough, no chest pain and most important to me, NO MORE ASTHMA ATTACKS. My acid was spilling over into my lungs causing me to spend time in the hospital several times a year for astha attacks, for several years in a row, before a lung doctor found the cause for my Asthma. I highly recommend this surgery.

I had the surgery 3 years ago. Fabulous results. No complications.  The burning sensation stopped.  Periodic gas but never took anything but tea or an over the counter chewable med to relieve it. I did have 2 vomitting episodes from a stomach bug and food poisoning and did so without a problem.
