POST OPERATIVE GALLBLADDER/GALLSTONE REMOVAL

by SHANNONSCHF, Jul 20, 2001 12:00AM
I had my gallbladder & stone removed 4 days ago.  Today I had to take a laxitive in order to have a bm.  The bm was a mustard colored.  Is this normal or is this something to be concerned about?  I appreciate any information that you can give me regarding the post operative problems/expectations.

Thank you,

It is common after abdominal surgery to need a laxative to have a BM. It can be caused by the surgery, anesthesia or the pain medications you take. Narcotics cause constipation. THe mustard color could be related to the change in bile production now that your gallbladder is gone. If it continues let your doctor know at your follow up visit. Good Luck.

I, too, had surgery a few days ago.  I have not had a bm yet.  I am passing gas.  So will it be better to take a laxative or is a stool softener sufficient?  I am not to worried now that I see other people are having this problem.  I will discuss it on my doctor visit next week.  But do you recommend taking something before I get to backed up?

I had gallbladder removal surgery four days ago and I still have the same pain across my shoulder blades that I had before the surgery.  Also, my full rib cage feels "sore", just like before the surgery.  Will this go away once the healing is complete?  Both are now and were previously increased upon lying down.
