Pain after Laproscopic Hernia Surgery

by Aub, Apr 27, 2007 12:00AM
I had an initial laproscopic hernia surgery in 2002 where the mesh was placed directly under the first muscle layer.  I think this is called a TEPP repair.  I had many problems thereafter.  There was no sharp pain but just discomfort.  About 3 weeks ago I had it redone.  The new surgeon found the initial mesh not properly attached but more or less floating. There was a medium sized hernia in the space where the mesh should have been. (And no scar tissue could be seen or was there evidence it was ever attached properly.)  He cut out some of the mesh and then proceed to place the mesh under the deepest muscle layer called a TAPP repair.  This was fixed with staples (or something like that).  I have some general discomfort but not too bad.  If I sometimes get in the car and swing my left leg in (the side where I had the operation), I sometimes get a sharp pain and then it goes away immediately.  Strangely, I have some minor body itching that makes me want to scratch.  Sometimes on my hands, the back of the neck, etc.  I think the surgeon said this may very well be healing.  Do these symtoms sound normal to you after a laproscopic hernia repair?

I am not a surgeon, so my insight into this question is limited.

Itching can certainly be caused by the healing process.  However, infection can also lead to itching, and the area should be closely evaluated for redness or discharge that may be caused by any skin infection.  You can also consider an allergic reaction to the surgical dressings or mesh material.

The pain can also be a surgical complication, and this should be examined by your surgeon.

If the pain continues, imaging the affected area can be considered with a CT scan.  Any abscesses underneath the surgical site can lead to this picture.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
