Pain that goes back and forth from sharp pains under right rib to nagging constant dull pain in stomach.

About a year and a half ago I let a nagging pain under my right rib persist for several months before going to my family doctor, who tested and found that I was positive for H. pylori. I was treated with Prevpac. At the same time I entered in a diet with my husband whom we had recently found was diabetic. So I wondered if it was the diet change as well as Prevpac that cured the condition which had seemed to have disappeared ? Anyhow back to the present, just recently the pains under my right rib has once again reoccurred as well as a dull nagging pain in my epigastric region (this is new) not a symptom of the past condition. I went to my family practitioner who once again tested for h. pylori. with positive results ( I have been doing some research and noticed that when tested by blood sample h. pylori can show up positive as antibodies even if you are ridden of the bacteria. Any how the doctor has sent me to a specialist who had me fast for 12 hours and then did an endoscopic procedure in my stomach and duodenum, which the only results were food that had not digested in the 12 hour period which he had me fast. When asked about my pain being on a scale of 1-10 I answered usually a 7 unless reaching for objects which triggered sever pain, and other such movements

I'm hoping that this might help other people with the same symptoms as I

i had gallstones for 10 years before i decided to have the surgery last april.  i had the same or similar symptoms that you did.  they were random for a long time and then came all the time until i had no choice but to have the surgery.

i also had chronic gastritis when i was scoped.  i just think you need to make sure that its not your gallbladder as many people overlook it and its an easy fix if it indeed is your gallbladder.  just dont wait 10 years to fix it like i did.  i feel much better exxcept now i have post-cholecystectomy syndrome which is mild.  anyone with advice on that for me?

Ok, so now you know that you are having trouble digesting food. Try enzymes for that, and have your thyroid levels checked out just in case.

With that said, your stomach is on the left side. Pain on the right/mid side can be caused by the gallbladder or liver. You should also have your LFT's checked out by your PC if you already haven't, and ask for that ultrasound as mentioned in that last post.

If everything comes back normal I would ask for a CT of the liver, gallbladder and kidneys.

Good Luck.

Have you had your gallbladder evaluated?  The location of your pain suggests this may be a problem as well.  It helps to pay attention to what you are eating that may trigger the pain, like fatty foods such as ice cream, cheese, etc...  The gallbladder can be visualized in the doctors office via Ultrasound.  However, you may need a Hidascan with CCK if no abnormalities are noticed via Ultrasound to see if the gallbladder is functioning properly.
