Paine and burning in upper stomach

by annjean, Mar 14, 2005 12:00AM
I have Barretts esophagus I have a mild dysplasia which showed about four years ago. I had a Lap Nissen and laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. I have had dirrahea for the last four years unless I took Metamucil but it didn`t agree with me. About a year ago I started feeling like maybe I had heart burn after about a month I started getting a burning sensation in my upper stomach. I went back to my surgeon. He did a endoscopy he said the lap was still intact and there was only two small red spots. He gave me Prevacid 30 mg. which I took it din`t help much. Also at the time I started getting constipated which was not what I was used to so the doctor did a Colonoscopy which was ok just showed diverticlosis which I had before. The doctor did not tell me to come back so I went to see a Gasterlogist about two months latter who did another Endoscopy on me she also did several biopsys which was neg. also for Pylori and Dysplasia. She said that bile was backing up from the bowel into the stomach She saw beads of blood in the stomach also I had a cat.scan which showed cysts on the liver and kidneys which Im supposed to have redone again in six months. I was put on Nexium times one, Choleslycamine daily and Carafate. SUS. Its been two and a half month its still aching and burning after I have a b.m. I have maybe 1 or 2 days a month that I don`t have any pain. I would like to know what caused this to happen to me my doctor will only say because I had my gallbladder out. I would like to know if there is any other options?. Or do I have to suffer the rest of my days?

The backup of bile into the stomach is known as bile acid reflux.  Some studies suggest it may occur with a higher frequency after a cholecystectomy.

The definitive treatment for something like this would be surgery.  Carafate and cholestyramine are reasonable treatment options.  Other considerations would be prostaglandin E2 as well as Ursodiol.

These options can be discussed with your gastroenterologist or in  conjunction with a surgical referral.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
