Persistant Pain RUQ

Persistant Pain RUQ

I had my Gallbladder removed 2 months ago but as pain RUQ persisted an ERCP & Sphincterotomy was done though no stone was found. I still have intermittent pain right upper abdo which appears to worsen as the day progresses and goes through to my back. On top of this this after eating I have a sickening ache across the upper abdo which can last anything up to a few hours. My stools alternate between very light in colour to what is considered normal. I have been constipated too. I have lost 6 kilos over a 5 week period. All tests so far ie blood, CT & MRCP are clear so I am at a loss as to what to do. I just want to be pain free and healthy but how do I achieve this? Please help as this is all becoming too much.

Have you been eating low or non-fat?  It's really the only way to go this early after having your GB removed.

I am 8 months post op and I still have pains/nausea and the stools are similar as you described.

I wish I had more to offer.  Did you have stones or inflammation or both?

With your gallbladder gone, which is how the release of bile was controlled, your liver is producing a steady flow. Cheri70 is right low fat is the only way to go but you may have to start taking Cholestyramine which is a powdered medication that you can mix with juice or water that binds the excess bile. Often times, especially in women, you can have stomach irritation and develop Colitis if your Liver produces too much bile. The small Intestines usually absorbs bile but if there is too much it can enter the Colon and scorch the lining causing inflammation, pain, nausea, and a variety of other issues. If your stomach pain persists ask your doctor about the Cholestyramine. Good luck to you...

Oh yeah, if you start taking Cholestyramine you must also take Vitamin D. This medication can block the absorption of fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, D, E, AND  K. Vitamin D is the one that seems to be the most affected by this medicine.  Good Luck!
