Please Help Right Side Abdominal Pain

by Crystal__0__0, Sep 08, 1998 12:00AM

I'm a 15 year old female. For the past month, I have been having pain on my lower right abdomin (abdomen).
On Monday August 24, I was rushed to Hospital for sick kids. That night they started me on an IV, and wasn't allowed to eat anything.
Finally around 10:30 I saw two surgons. They didn't think it was my appendix. My WBC was 9.9. At around 12:15 they admitted me to a room.
The only thing they gave to me for pain was plain tylenol. I was still not allowed to eat or drink. The next day I went for an ultrosound. They found a 4cm cyst on left ovary, which didn't explain the right side pain. Everything else look fine.
At that point I had seen 7 surgons, 2 pediactrics, 1 gyne, 2 kidney doctors, and 3 gi doctors. That night was bad I had a 1 hour spasm. The pain was a tight sensation and stabbing pain and it travelled to lower back both right and left. That is when a surgon from ER order an ex-ray. That showed inflamation (inflammation) in the abdomin (abdomen).
Next moring they ordered a Upper GI. The test from that came back fine. So it is now Wednesday that was the worst the spasm lasted about 3 1/2 hours, no doctor came to see me. Thursday was fun they gave me an enama cause of the barrium. That night I had a other spasm. Friday the head doctor of the case said I was allowed to eatand the iv could come out. Before that all I was having was water and jell-o. Friday night was the worst pain of all spasms it didn't last as long, but it was painful. Finally one of the surgons saw me in the spasm. Saturday was a other enama cause barium was still in me.
Sunday they had to put the iv back in cause i was not drinking enough. They also had to give me a other enama. Monday they ordered a ct scan, but couldn't do it cause i was full of barrium still. So i got a other thing i don't know what it was, it was taken by mouth. Tuesday went for other ex-ray showed i was still full of barrium so they gave me 4 litres of this nasty drink. Finally Wednesday the barrium was gone. Thursday went fro CT scan it came back norma, except the cyst on left side grew .5 cm. The gyne came to see me again and said it didn't need to come out. The surgon came and told my parents and I that I was going to be discharged cause they couldn't help me any more.
Before i was discharged they want me to see a peditatrian. When he came he suggested I see a phyciatrist. My mom say pretty much over my dead body, cause she has been a nurse in that field for 20 years. After that he pretty much said live with the pain, but i can't. Every time i eat an hour later i get a spasm. I have constent pain, sometimes it's worse than a spasm. That is no way for me to live, but he wants me to.
I have an appointment to see a peditatrian at the hospital on September the 22. I also have a gyne appointment on October 7th.
I just hope that anyone reads this can help me, cause I can't live with this pain for ever.
Thank you for reading this so for it to be long

Dear Crystal,
It is frustrating for physicians (upsetting to patients) to see (experience)severe abdominal pain and to not know the cause.  Unfortunately, this situation occurs relatively frequently because 1) many different diseases can cause the same types of pain and 2) doctors are only as smart as their tests.  If a test is reported as normal the doctor will exclude certain diagnoses from consideration.  IF there is a subtle abnormality that a is beneath the sensitivity of the test, then the doctor may miss the diagnosis.  Some of your pains appear to have been the result of retained barium.  This happens is older patients but is less common among younger patients.
The thoughts that come to mind, given the details in your email are the need to exclude 1) small intestine causes for the pain ( probably done if you had barium studies of the small intestine), 2) gastroparesis and 3)unusual causes for abdominal pain e.g. porphyria.
