after a manometry test, my doctor suggested achalasia surgery.. however, reading the symptoms of achalasia, i should not be able to belch, or vomit, and should be immune to acid reflux
specifically because ive vomited stomach acid... i usually get it when i havent eaten in a while, i can belch at will even.. and i can vomit, though when i do, my stomach hurts
first my symptoms started with GERD... i was getting heart burn
almost instantly, like it was scraping the walls of my throat clean (like a foaming pipe cleaner)
after having acid reflux for a few years, the reflux eventually stopped being so constant, it went from daily, to maybe twice a month and the swallowing problems started, now i choke on everything i eat, water seems to go down just fine, but food gets stuck and after drinking a mouthful or two of water, the food is flushed down for the most part.
the beginning of these symptoms seem to also correspond with a time i did gain weight from 270 to 340 (im 6'0) and now im down to about 310...
the barium swallow tests suggested the muscles in my esophagus were working fine, both food and the crackers they gave me passed through just fine. but the doctor who gave me the scope in the esophagus said my esophagus was a tad dialated and was retaining a bit of food... manometry test suggested the achalasia
my question is with these seemingly contradictary test results, and symptoms that seem to contradict achalasia (being able to belch, vomit, and get heart burn)... is there any chance the manometry test was wrong? or that perhaps something was causing pressure on the esophagus?... could a hiatus hernia be possible or would a scope test have been able to tell for certain if i had one?... if i had a hiatus hernia, could it cause a stricture for my food to pass through? and could it falsify the manometry test?...
what would anyone here suggest or advice? what is the likeliness my achalasia is misdiagnosed? if it is, what else could be wrong? what should i tell my new doctor to search or test for as other likely causes?... from what i could tell the person giving me the manometry test wasnt too experienced with it and took about half an hour just getting the machine calibrated
and... if i do have achalasia, and i have the surgery, what am i looking for as a life long side effect? GERD sure, but how bad? and with daily medication, could i still enjoy the foods i love such as cappuccino, and spicy foods? i grow my own jalapenos so thats not something i want to give up
